Introduction: :
Chemotherapy is a crucial treatment for cancer patients, but it often comes with various challenges and side effects. To optimize medication management and improve treatment outcomes, pharmacist counseling has become an important aspect of patient care. However, chemotherapy regimens can be complicated, requiring patients to adhere to their medications diligently and manage them effectively to maximize benefits and minimize side effects. Pharmacist counseling has gained recognition as an essential part of patient care, providing expertise in medication-related matters, patient education, and support throughout the chemotherapy journey. This study aimed to assess patients' perception and satisfaction regarding pharmacist counseling.
Objectives: :
1. To investigate patients’ perception of Oncology Pharmacist. 2. To evaluate patients’ satisfaction with Pharmacist counselling.
Methodology: :
Patients were referred to Oncology Pharmacists by Medical Oncologists for their first chemotherapy consultation. Those who attended the consultation between December 1, 2023, and January 31, 2024, were asked to complete an 8-question survey on patient satisfaction.
Result & Outcome: :
A total of 40 surveys were collected and analyzed. Among the respondents, 88% were above 50 years old, with 40% falling within the age group of 61 to 70 years old. Before attending the consultation, 63% (25 out of 40) of patients were either "confident" or "very confident" in the professional capabilities of oncology pharmacists. After attending the pharmacist consultation, 100% of patients indicated an improvement in their confidence regarding chemotherapy. Additionally, all patients or caregivers agreed or strongly agreed that the oncology pharmacist had clearly explained the side effects of chemotherapy and the methods of management. Furthermore, 98% of patients (39 out of 40) were either "confident" or "very confident" in the professional capabilities of oncology pharmacists after the consultation. Overall, all patients reported being "very satisfied" or “satisfied” with the pharmacist counseling. Pharmacist counseling was well-received by Oncology patients at Queen Mary Hospital. All patients expressed confidence in knowledge of their chemotherapy and the capabilities of Oncology Pharmacists after the consultation. Pharmacist counseling has proven to be a valuable intervention for optimizing chemotherapy outcomes. By addressing medication adherence, improving patient education, managing side effects, and promoting overall well-being, pharmacists significantly contribute to patients' positive chemotherapy experiences. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating pharmacist counseling into standard care protocols, providing patients with comprehensive support, and enhancing the overall effectiveness of chemotherapy.
