Introduction: :
Midwife-led continuity of care has significant benefits including more spontaneous vaginal birth, fewer epidural anaesthesia, episiotomies or instrumental births.
In 1999, the Continuous Midwifery Care (CMC) Team started midwife-led care service in Kwong Wah Hospital, Hong Kong. Team experienced midwives provide comprehensive antenatal, intra-partum and postnatal care to low risk childbearing women. In 2007, an Integrated Birth Centre for low-risk care was built with home-like environment and is run by the CMC Team midwives. The Integrated Birth Centre was suspended since 2017 due to hospital redevelopment programme and reopened in October 2023 to provide continuity and individualized maternity care to low-risk women throughout pregnancy and childbirth.
Objectives: :
To study the effects of Midwife-led model of care in Integrated Birth Centre on the natural birth, use of non-pharmacology pain relief methods and initiation of breastfeeding.
Methodology: :
Pilot study.
Result & Outcome: :
Totally, 4 deliveries in Integrated Birth Centre from October to December 2023. 100% women had used non-pharmacological pain relief methods, such as mobilization, breathing exercise or massage. The normal vaginal birth rate is 100%, intact perineum rate is 25 %, perineum tear rate is 75%, 75% women initiation breastfeeding at birth.
