Introduction: :
In recent years, other than the increasing staff turnover at both nursing and supporting staff, inadequate experience ward in-charge nurse is also a problem in a busy medical ward. This will consequent to an untidy and unsafety ward such as inadequate ward stock, unorganized storage, unfollow up outstanding equipment repair record, ineffective procedure trolley preparation etc. In fact, to keep a tidy and safe ward environment is every staff’s responsibility. Therefore, a CQI project to develop 6 initiatives 1) medical consumables color coding storage system, 2) equipment records tracking file, 3) bedside procedure quick guide, 4) ward tidiness photo guide, 5) ward management handbook, 6) OSH focus area assessment and training guide and implemented in 4 acute medical wards. By standardizing these essential matters in ward, work efficiency and environmental safety were expected to be enhanced.
Objectives: :
To promote staff and patient safety
To enhance the quality of care
To standardize the training schedule and work instruction
To provide a quick reference for ward management
Methodology: :
During the implementation period from June 2022 to March 2023, the program involved rearranging for more than 250 consumables items, reorganizing the storage location with color coding, standardizing of 3 reference guides and 1 handbook which involved around 350 equipment inventory, 8 bedside procedures, 14 good practices on maintaining ward tidiness and 9 common ward management procedures. A pre-and-post questionnaires were developed to collect staff satisfaction rate on the CQI program
Result & Outcome: :
A total of 76 post-standardization program questionnaires were collected. 92% of staff agreed that the time spent on locating and collecting the consumables were significantly reduced. Over 88% of staff expressed that the implementation of the program helped them in handling the ward operation smoothly and easily.
The program was successfully accomplished with positive feedback. The standardization of ward essential functions can facilitate staff to work smoothly in particular during ward rotation. However, the good practice still need ongoing audit to maintain the standard.
