Supporting Carers of Dementia Patients – By Their Sides, From Their Backs, Or In Our Heads?

Abstract Description

Dementia caregiving is easier said than done. The same applies to carer support. Carers of persons living with dementia experienced exceptional demands on physical and mental strength. We believe that there is a reason for carers to carry on despite intense hardships and hurdles. Apart from providing practical logistic help and generic psychological support, we attempt to develop a care support protocol which addresses three main components of dementia caregiving: knowledge on dementia, self-awareness of tension and stress, anticipatory grief management. Caregivers of elders with dementia and mood disorders attended a 10-session carer support program. After intervention, we identified improvements in depressive and anxiety symptoms. It is hoped that the program will help to ignite internal strength for carers who determine to walk by the side and shadow the golden paths of their beloved ones.
