Introduction :
In line with the increasing trend of SMART initiative within hospitals, our O&T department has made use of electronic display (E-display) to deliver patients and caregivers important public health measures, useful information and knowledge.
E-display replacing analog surfaces, offers visually engaging and interactive presentations that effectively convey complex, but precise and consistent information to patients and their caregivers. These displays provide operational efficiency, promote environmentally friendly, enable easy accessibility, refresh and display information longitudinally or continuously. The implementation of E-display has facilitated the broadcasting of customized videos as well as Hospital Authority and Department of Health videos to our orthopedic patients.
Objectives :
1. To deliver patients standardized information and education related to orthopedic specialty.
2. To raise awareness among patients and their caregivers regarding patient safety.
3. To enhance the understanding of patient journey among patients and their caregivers while optimizing the time nurses spend on explanation.
Methodology :
Since February 2023, nurses first identify the target audience, then define objectives and plan the content for each video clip. The content of each video was customized for a specific purpose, currently encompassing knowledge about anti-osteoporotic medication, precautions to prevent silent aspiration, and guidance on the discharge process. These customized videos, along with other official videos, were repeatedly broadcasted on the E-displays installed in all orthopedic wards. To facilitate and encourage patients and their caregivers to watch these videos during the ward orientation process upon admission and visiting hours, E-displays were hung near the ward entrance and nursing station.
Result & Outcome :
A survey was conducted among the nursing staff to gather feedback regarding the customized videos displayed on the E-display. 90% of them agreed that the E-display and customized videos effectively delivered knowledge about anti-osteoporotic medication to patients. Furthermore, a substantial majority of nurses recognized that the E-display and customized videos successfully raised caregiver awareness about silent aspiration. Beside, nearly 90% of the respondents agreed that the videos made explanations about the discharge process smoother and more effective. The positive feedback is further emphasized by the vast majority who recommended using the E-display to broadcast more customized videos.
Furthermore, all capable patients who had watched the video demonstrated a significant improvement in their overall understanding on Fosamax intake, both before their first dose and at the time of discharge.
Despite facing limitations such as lack of professional filming staff and equipment, as well as time constraints in video production, our department remained committed to expanding the use of the E-display to create more informative and educational videos. Our aims are to improve patient and caregiver education, enhance patient safety, and foster a better understanding of various orthopaedic-related care.
