Introduction :
The Hospital Authority collaborated with the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission to launch the "Greater Bay Area (GBA) Specialty Nursing (Gerontology Nursing) Knowledge Exchange Program. "Ten GBA nurses were allocated in KCC from April 17, 2023, to February 25, 2024. The Nurse Consultant (Gerontology) used Bloom's Taxonomy (BT) as the framework to design the specialty nursing knowledge exchange program in KCC. BT encompasses cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. Given that Gerontology nursing focuses on high-touch care, the program's design primarily focused on the cognitive domain, with a smaller emphasis on the affective domain.
Objectives :
To facilitate GBA nurses in integrating specialty knowledge via planned strategies, and strengthen achievement in the cognitive domain: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing.
Methodology :
1. Orientation and Induction Program: Through elderly patient’s journey

Using the Donabedian Model, NC introduced the “Ten Acute Care for the Elderly” (ACE) and respective nursing foci in an acute setting. An induction program was also delivered in Rehabilitation and Convalescent settings.

2. Consolidation sessions

Sharing and case discussions was conducted, guiding GBA nurses in cases presentation. This facilitated their expression, execution, illustration, and review for constructing the integrated Gerontology nursing care plan.

3. Clinical teaching activities

NC conducted clinical teaching in the ward, guiding GBA nurses to demonstrate their understanding, application, analysis, and evaluation of learned knowledge.

4. Observation learning

Hospital visits were arranged to help gain a better understanding of Geriatric services in KCC.

5. Simulated scenarios: For synthesizing

GBA nurses were assigned in three simulated scenarios. They worked as in groups to create plans for Gerontology Nursing Setting.

Moreover, in the affective domain, debriefing sessions allowed the GBA nurses to share their observations and experiences, while the NC guided them in reflective learning.
Result & Outcome :
Results:

Feedback questionnaire was design based on the cognitive domain of BT. Evaluation results showed strong agreement (90% to 100%) with the intended knowledge exchange outcomes, indicating that the program achieved its expected goals.

Conclusions:

The Gerontological nursing exchange program in KCC, designed based on Bloom's learning theory, successfully achieved its objectives and proved effective in promoting specialty knowledge exchanges. The program provided a valuable opportunity for mutual inspiration in the specialty professional development of nurses from KCC and the GBA.
