Introduction :
Associated Nurse Consultant (ANC) is a new rank positioned between Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) and Nurse Consultants (NC). In KCC, NC (Gerontology) captured the opportunity of “GBA Nurses (Gerontology Nursing) Specialty Knowledge Exchange Program" to implement a grooming plan that facilitate the role conception of novice ANCs from April 17, 2023, to February 25, 2024.
Objectives :
1. To enhance job enrichment for ANCs by broadening and expanding their scope of service in Geriatric care based on elderly patient journey.
2. To facilitate and enlighten exposure and opportunities for the development of expert clinical knowledge and leadership skills.
3. To engage ANCs in experiential learning opportunities and facilitate advancement of practicing level.
Methodology :
1. Orientation & Induction Program (O&I): Acute setting
Engaging in O&I program for GBA nurses: Inspiring ANCs to use the Donabedian Model in quality management to elevate their competency level in analysis and evaluation.
2. Consolidation sessions
Role modelled in cases sharing and discussion while guiding GBA nurses in case presentation and construct the integrated nursing care plan. This reinforces respective competence in professional activities in the future.
3. Clinical teaching
Demonstrated of clinical teaching in ward inspiring ANCs the technique of developing subordinates in the clinical setting.
4. Observation learning
Through engagement in respective hospital visits in KCC, complementing ANCs to have a more comprehensive picture of elderly patient journey. Moreover, it broadened their exposure.
5. Simulated scenarios: For synthesizing
Through demonstration in leading GBA nurses with planned simulated scenarios and in creating Geriatric Services’ plans, enlightening ANCs in competence of synthesis in different Gerontology Nursing.
6. Debriefing session
Shared observations and experiences of GBA nurses through guiding reflective learning. This further inspired ANCs & strengthen their practicing level regarding the important of high-touch care for elderly patient.
Result & Outcome :
Results:
Novice ANCs expressed that the exposure complemented a comprehensive picture of the patient journey. Moreover, they expressed they can capture experiential learning opportunities and increase their exposure via job enrichment. They opined that this program can help to develop the expert clinical knowledge and leadership skills through various strategies and activities designed.
Conclusions:
Engagement in the “GBA Nurses (Gerontology Nursing) Specialty Knowledge Exchange Program", successfully achieved the objectives for facilitating role conception of novice ANCs, and inspired their competency development. ANC’s expressed in the evaluation, that they were enlighten via experiential learning, exposure, and opportunities for the development of expert clinical knowledge and leadership skills. Moreover, they capture the opportunity to promote their advancement in practicing level.
