Introduction :
With limited rehabilitation training provided on Sunday. Patients often express complaints about boring and prolonged bed rest, which may lead to various issues such as deconditioning and prolong length of hospitalization.

Illness can have a negative impact on a patient’s mood and motivating, hindering their rehabilitation progress. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure, motivation, and learning, plays a crucial role in this regard. Playing games is considered a beneficial method to increase dopamine production in the brain, potentially leading to improved happiness and well-being for patients.

To address these concerns, the “Joyful Oldies on Sunday” was piloted since November 2023 in Ward 1B of Geriatrics and Rehabilitation Service of Haven of Hope Hospital.
Objectives :
1. To improve patient’s mood and promote their motivation in rehabilitation.

2. To enhance rapport between patients and healthcare workers.
Methodology :
-A 30 minutes small group workshop with maximum 8 participants

-Each workshop contains 1-2 games designed by members, in which the green concept of recycling waste to create most game props is used.

-Group games are focused to allow interaction between patients and cognitive stimulation. In addition to games, craft activities will be added during special festivals.

-The target participants are patients who can sit unsupported for 30 minutes, and do not exhibit aggressive behavior.

-The team nurses will act as facilitators.

-Participant and staff satisfaction surveys are conducted after each workshop.
Result & Outcome :
-8 workshops were delivered with 44 participants from November 2023 to January 2024. Total 14 nurses had participated in the workshops.

-The overall satisfaction rate was 97%. 97% of participants expressed that the games made them happier; 95% of participants agreed that this program was interesting and enjoyable; 100% of participants wanted to join the program again. Furthermore, 100% of nurses expressed that the rapport between patient and staff was enhanced; 97% of nurses felt their job satisfaction and engagement was enhanced.

-JOS can provide a positive intervention for improving patients’ mood, promoting their motivation in rehabilitation, enhancing rapport between patients and healthcare workers, and enhancing healthcare workers’ job satisfaction.
