Introduction :
This study examines the transformative impact of technology on the informed consent process within ambulatory care setting. The advent of innovative tech solution such as video education has revolutionized the traditional approach of obtaining informed consent from patients. The creation of consent information video for cardiovascular procedures can simplify the detail and visualize the information by means of animation, visual aids and demonstrations. It empowers patients to understand the procedural detail, potential complication and benefit. In a busy hospital environment, it could allow patients to have a “three-dimensional” understanding of various procedures, which help promoting trust and transparency between healthcare providers and patients.
Objectives :
(1) Patient’s satisfaction score on brand-new video education; (2) Patient’s comprehension and understanding of cardiovascular procedure; (3) Pre and post video education on decision-making process.
Methodology :
Information video of cardiac procedures such as coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention, permanent pacemaker implantation and electrophysiology plus ablation were recorded in collaboration with Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The indication, potential complications and procedural detail were explained in accordance with standard consent endorsed by Central Committee of Cardiology. Our patients and carers attending our Medical Ambulatory Care Center (MACC) at Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) were granted access to the education video prior to consent taking. The access was provided by either 1) scanning the QR code using their own cell phones 2) utilizing designated electronic tablet in MACC. Having completed the informed consent, patients and carers were invited to complete post-consent questionnaire using Google Form platform, in which 10 questions were included. In this questionnaire, participants had to grade the satisfaction score from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree).
Result & Outcome :
The satisfaction survey was held from Oct 2022 to Dec 2023 of which 368 participants were successfully recruited. Based on the survey result, the integration of brand-new education video was warmly welcomed by participants with average satisfaction score achieving 4.48 out of 5. In addition, the participants have gained tremendous knowledge, risk and benefit on their cardiovascular procedures with the average score attaining 4.43 out of 5. Furthermore, majority of participants concurred the education video has significantly improved their decision-making process as reflected from the average score reaching 4.33 out of 5. The general experience from this survey was very positive and have given patients a peace of mind as they have a vivid information about the forthcoming procedures.
The implementation of information video for medical procedures has proven enhancing patients’ experience, understanding and satisfaction in routine consent process. A video can paint a thousand words, our healthcare professionals should embrace technological advancement and incorporate information videos into their consent taking practice.
