Introduction :
Under the 10 years Redevelopment plan in hospital Authority, Kwong Wah Hospital is one of the major redevelopment hospital projects in Kowloon Central Cluster with Phase I new building to be completed in 2023. Staff engagement is fundamental to the success of the any process including services transition to a brand new hospital building. Also, it’s been shown by research data that staff who feel connected to their organization project will work harder, stay longer, and motivate others. 92% of executives in a study report also stated that engaging employees perform better, boosting the success of their teams and the outcomes of their organizations. Therefore, a serious of programs and training were conducted throughout the year of 2023 and both clinical and non-clinical services were transited to new building smoothly and seamlessly.
Objectives :
To engage all nursing staff for the implementation of move in plan of phase 1 KWH redevelopment project in 2023

To introduce schedules, checklists, commissioning dashboard and tools equipping all nursing staff during the move in plan

To ensure the smoothness of relocating all services, facilities, equipment and patients from original building to brand new building
Methodology :
A serious of nursing staff forums and training programs were conducted before the move in plan in 2023. A systematic information dissemination process ensuring that all the nursing staff performs in accordance with the move-in plan, contingency plans and all the staff safety arrangements. The contents includes

- Introduction of New services such as Emergency Medicine Ward and Central Decontamination Centre (CDC) and new Operation Theatres

- Service update in D&IR, Pathology, Pharmacy & Phlebotomist teams

- Move-in schedules, Commissioning checklist and patients' routes in the new building

-Updates in Nursing Practices, Ward routines and SMART IT initiatives such as IPMOE and Clinical Dashboard

- Contingency Plans, Disaster plan and Preparation Drills

- Arrangement of Emergency Support Hub, Mobile support team from Central Nursing Division

- Reinforcement of OSH information such as Fire Safety and Manual Handling Operation (MHO)
Result & Outcome :
The move in period was across 14.5.2023-8.6.2023 and the services interruption was minimized. There were over 200 attendances in each of the six nursing forums via both face-to-face and zoom mode. Evaluation from staff survey resulted in the forums were encouraging. Staff's feedback shown the content were informative and essential. Staff appreciated the information is given in advanced and good to recall for the management of emergency situation.

Both clinical and non-clinical services were completely transited to new building smoothly and seamlessly. The new hospital building was in full service function in June 2023.

A comprehensive staff engagement plan is a proactive strategy that describes the actions plan and a step by step guidance for managing staff expectation. Staff is equiped and able to take responses to any emergency event that could happen during the move in to new building. This staff engagement and training programs play a significant role in services continuity, risk management and disaster response to all nursing staff.
