Introduction :
Primary school years are critical for children's physical and psychological development. To ensure that our kids are enjoying a healthy and fulfilling life, it is important to promote their physical and psychological well-being. COVID-19 has a negative impact on the day-to-day life of students, with school closure and detrimental effects on health and well-being that cannot be underestimated. TKOH Paediatrics Department has initiated an outreach School Student Health Program which collaborates with multi-specialties including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and the hospital health resources centre, with an aim of enhancing the physical and psychological health among local primary school students.
Objectives :
The primary objective is to educate and empower students with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle. We aim to raise the awareness about the importance of physical exercise, proper nutrition, and personal hygiene through interactive sessions. In addition to physical health, the program also addresses the psychological well-being of primary school students. Mental health issues among children are becoming increasingly prevalent, and it is crucial to equip students with strategies to cope with stress, manage emotions, and build resilience.
Methodology :
The health program includes educational talks and interactive workshops. Doctors and nurses provide valuable information on the healthy eating, regular physical activities, and maintaining good personal hygiene practices. Strategies on maintaining mental health was delivered, such as improving emotional intelligence, fostering positive relationships, and developing effective communication skills. The program recognizes the importance of collaboration between medical professionals and educators. Schools are encouraged to integrate health education into the curriculum. The involvement of physiotherapists in the program emphasizes the significance and importance of physical activity on children. They provide guidance on proper posture, ergonomics, and injury prevention. Meanwhile, the hospital health resources centre provides access to a wide range of resources and also serves as a hub for information and assistance which enhances the effectiveness of the program.
Result & Outcome :
Started from 2023 second half-year, we have reached out to Three Primary Schools in the Tseung Kwan O District with a total attendance of 506 students, age ranging from 6 to 10. A Post-Promoting Healthy Lifestyle in Primary School Students Program Survey was conducted among these 506 students. Totally 504 out of 506 evaluation reports received. Over 86% of the participants agreed the program could enhance their knowledge and skills to lead a healthy lifestyle. In conclusion, the Program could equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about their health. Through a collaborative approach, health strategies are integrated into the school environment, fostering a culture of health and well-being. Our society needs to invest in the health and well-being of our young generation.
