Introduction :
Clinical Response Team (CRT) of Kowloon Hospital (KH) was established since 2009. It provides timely and effective care to any person who require emergency medical assistance in hospital compound and vicinities during the critical times when ambulance was on the way. In the past 5 years, the CRT of Ward 3D, Main Building (MB) have handled 28 cases. Among them, 11% required resuscitation.
In view of increasing case complexity and challenges related to critical cases handling, and to facilitate succession, a workgroup was developed to design a program to enrich the relevant knowledge and skill of nurses selected for CRT. As a result, victims could receive quality care more effectively and efficiently. This program is based on scenario-based training video which facilitates staff training on provision of CRT service.
Objectives :
The learning tool of scenario-based training video ensures that;
1) all nursing staff of CRT are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide high-quality care;
2) all victims could receive the same level of care due to standardized practices;
3) staff morale is improved through providing them with opportunities for professional development and growth.
Methodology :
In October 2023, a workgroup consisted of DOM, WM and 3 APNs was developed. We conducted meetings to establish a program with a scenario-based training video to enhance the knowledge and skills of our staff in providing CRT service. Accessing the learning tool is flexible as all staff can reach the learning video at a designated computer in ward at their convenience. This can be particularly useful for healthcare professionals who may have busy schedules and limited time for training. The tool is beneficial for both new CRT members and for experienced CRT members looking for opportunities to enhance and refresh their skills. Upon completion of training, all attended staff were invited to complete an evaluation form for the program.
Result & Outcome :
All nurses were satisfied with the program because it enhanced their knowledge and skills in handling persons requiring emergency medical assistance. They agreed that the training video was practical and useful.
In conclusion, scenario-based training video is an effective way to train CRT members. They provide learners with realistic scenarios, flexible learning, standardized and cost-effective training. The way forward, we will engage more staff in our department to join the CRT team, so that the department can ensure that all CRT members are well-trained to provide high quality CRT service.
