Introduction :
Patient fall is a major concern in geriatric wards as it causes severe injuries and complications for elderly. At the same time, restraint-free culture has been well-established in M&G wards in Shatin Hospital. The sustainability of ward patrolling and staff relieving system is a good practice for fall prevention. However, as a tight workforce in our current situation, and some fall-risk patients are required to locate in a side room for isolation, we need to explore other alternate initiatives by using new technology to enhance fall precaution. A good robot assistant, “TEMI”, has been working in wards; Nurses have continuously implemented various measures for preventing the patient fall. Nurses try to adopt the robotics linking with the safety monitoring system aiming for early detecting of patient fall.
Objectives :
To prevent patient falls in a side room

To enhance staff’s awareness to promote patient safety

To maximize the use of IT technology for fall prevention strategies
Methodology :
There are 2 systems adapted in 2 of the pilot wards in SH M&G. System 1 Using the robot technology combined with the alarm sensor system. (Temi-Qleap system).

1. Once patient leaves the bed 2. The alarm sensor system will be triggered; the bedside monitor, Central monitor and the pager will ring and notice nurses 3. At the same time, Robot Temi will move toward the patient and start a video call via Qleap App automatically. 4. Nurse can see the patient via the Temi’s camera on the Central monitor and start communicating with patient via Temi’s screen.

System 2 Using the alarm sensor system which connects with the bedside monitor, Central monitor (at the nursing station) and the pager (Qleap pager system) 1. Once patient leaves the bed

2. The system will be triggered and the bedside monitor, Central monitor and pager will ring and notice the nurses, even if they are away from the side room or Nursing Station.
Result & Outcome :
No fall incident was sustained in the implementation period since 13 Feb 2023 for those cases using the “Temi-Qleap App” system in the two implementing wards.
