Introduction :
It is not uncommon that most of our ward staffs are not familiar with the four key HA core values “People-centered Care”, “Professional Service”, “Committed Staff” and “Teamwork”; and their related work behaviors. Promulgation of HA core values and reinforcement of core-values related work behaviors are crucial to enhance staff engagement, facilitate positive workplace environment and improve patients’ experience. In 2021, a nursing continuous quality improvement project was conducted to intensify HA core-values work behaviors and staff engagement.
Objectives :
1. To intensify staff’s understanding and awareness of four HA core values and related work behaviors 2. To facilitate positive workplace environment 3. To improve patients’ experience
Methodology :
A “Pre-test” versus “Post-test” study design was adopted. All nurses, PCAs & EAs working in three Paediatric wards were recruited in the program. Training on HA core values and the required work behaviors were conducted to the recruited staffs. Positive reinforcement strategies were adopted like daily huddle session, weekly sharing platform and “Star” of the month election etc. To engage staffs, a department-based HA core-values promulgation poster was designed by frontline colleagues. A pre- and post-staff survey (six-point Likert scale) with focus on four HA core-values and work behaviors was designed. Post-staff survey and patient feedback survey were conducted & evaluated six months after start of the program.
Result & Outcome :
From August 2021 to April 2022, total 209 staffs had joined the program (Nurse 68%, PCA 26%, EA 6%). The total score of pre- and post-training staff survey on the understanding and awareness of four HA core values and work behaviors had increased from 99.6 to 126, mean score from 4.15 to 5.25 (p<0.001). Total 198 nos. of patient feedback surveys were collected from March to July 2022 among which 106 nos. (53.5%) with written appreciation compatible with HA core values-related work behaviors. Besides, most of the staffs were able to verbalize four HA core values and supported each other with teamwork during their daily work. In December 2022, one PCA had received “Instant Spot Award” for her dedication, teamwork and professional efforts during the course of her work. Staff engagement project on HA core-values was effective to intensify staff’s understanding and awareness to incorporate four HA core values into their daily work and successfully facilitate positive workplace environment and enhance patients’ experience.
