Introduction :
More and more patients who require NG tube feeding opt for home care. To ensure the quality of care and reduce the risks of complications, systematic nursing intervention, including comprehensive educational pamphlets and on-hand demonstration by Geri-Nurse is usually practiced in patient education. However, most of them are cared for domestic maids from Indonesia or Philippines. We are not sure how much the maids understand during the teaching process. According to studies, using an image-based training tool to assist the users’ learning is simple and inexpensive, it can improve their understanding. Therefore, videos with English or Indonesian subtitles (developed by HHH) will be used as a teaching tool. Moreover, a systematic checklist was deployed. It guides the nursing staff to assess the caregivers’ techniques for NG tube feeding during return demonstration and make the process more appropriate and effective.
Objectives :
1. To ensure caregivers have basic nursing knowledge and skills in NG tube management at home
2. To improve the communication among caregivers and nursing staff
3. Time-saving by shortening the Geri-nurse’s demonstrates duration and frequency of return demonstration by caregivers to reduce the LOS.
4. To develop a systemic flow while assessing the caregivers’ techniques for NG tube feeding by using the checklist
Methodology :
1. Geri-Nurse demonstrates duration
2. Staff Satisfaction Survey to check the effectiveness of the checklist and the whole process
3. The frequency of return demonstration by caregiver
Result & Outcome :
No official statistics before this program, according to experience, about 4 times return demonstrations and 1hr for Geri-Nurse demonstrates was required.
Completed cases:32, total 47 caregivers has return demonstration, but 8 of them did not watch the video before the Geri-Nurse demonstration, the result as below: the frequency of return demonstration(average): 1.4(video seen)/3.4(video not seen) Geri-Nurse demonstrates duration (average):33.8min(video seen)/55.6min(video not seen)
Watching educational videos before demonstrations indicates a significant reduction in both the Geri-Nurse demonstration duration and frequency of caregiver return demonstrations. This suggests that incorporating educational videos is an effective approach to enhance caregiver performance and efficiency. By minimizing the need for repeated demonstrations, educational videos contribute to time and resource savings in caregiver training.90% of nursing staff agree and strongly agree the program is effective.
