Introduction :
Inhaled medications play a crucial role in preventing exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, patient with incorrect usage of inhaled medication is frequently observed in TBCU due to the nature of individual cases. This undermines the effectiveness of therapy and increases the risk of exacerbation. To enhance the disease management, it is important to involve nursing staff in ensuring the accurate administration of inhaled medications. This can be achieved through timely assessments, patient education, and continuous evaluation during daily care. Their active participation plays a pivotal role in optimizing patient outcomes.
Objectives :
1) Ensure patient can receive accurate inhaled medication on daily care. 2) Facilitate frontline nurses to provide precise assessment and education to patient.
Methodology :
1) Review and assemble resources Establish a one-stop platform ‘Inhaled Medication Education File’ integrating Poster, Pamphlets, Assessment forms and education materials. To facilite 2) Organize seminar and workshop 2.1) Seminar targeting all TBCU frontline nursing staff (including RN and EN) with post quiz (passing mark 80%). 2.2) ‘Hand-on workshop’ which go through all inhaler devices, for nursing staff within 5-year experience and all ‘Inhaler Ambassador’. 3) Provide support and reinforcement 3.1) Assign ‘Inhaler Ambassador’ on each ward of TBCU, to assist frontline staff on inhaler education. 3.2) Service review on difficult case referral, resource utilization and feedbacks from frontline during inhaler assessment and education.
Result & Outcome :
1) Total 1 poster, 3 assessment forms and 14 Inhaler pamphlets have reviewed and updated. New ‘Inhaled Medication Education File’ implemented on each floor of TBCU and inhaled medication education materials gathered. 2.1) 5 seminars held with total 56 participants, 86.67% participants passed the post Quiz (passing mark 80%) on first attempt and all passed on the second attempt after revision. 2.2)‘Hand-on workshop’ conducted total 19 participants with 11 (100%) nursing staff within 5-year experience and 8 ‘Inhaler Ambassador’ have go through all inhaler devices. 3.1) Implemented ‘Inhaler Ambassador’ on each floor of TBCU since May 2023. 3.2) Completed 5 difficult case referrals and assisted 30 cases for frontline on inhaler education from 1st May to 31st Dec 2023.
