Introduction :
Dementia is not only a disease to the patient; caregivers of persons with dementia are highly stressed because of their caregiving duties. Interventions for the caregivers are developed to lessen the impact of burdensome task and depression
Objectives :
Evaluated the effectiveness of caregiver workshop in alleviating caregiver burden and enhancing caregiving self-efficacy
Methodology :
25 caregivers were recruited at the Psychogeriatric Day Hospital (H2), Geriatric Day Hospital (K6) and the TWGHS Fong Shu Chuen District Elderly Community Center (DECC). The workshop consisted of 12 weekly sessions with multidisciplinary involvement and a variety of topics was covered. Caregivers self-efficacy was measured by the Revised Scale for Caregiving Self-efficacy and the Caregiver burden was measured by the Chinese version of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). Satisfaction survey was designated to collect qualitative data after completion of the programme. Descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis were both utilized for data analysis.
Result & Outcome :
25 caregivers participated into this study, 5 of them could not complete the workshop due to personal issue. Dropout rate was 20%. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was conducted to determine the effect of the training. The results indicate a significant reduce of caregivers’ burden (Z = -3.487, p = <.001) and improve of caregivers’ self-efficacy (Z = -2.254, p = .024) on caring the dementia patients after received the training
