Introduction :
Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercise (PFME) is the first line treatment for Urinary Incontinence (UI) but adherence to PFME is often problematic. The main barriers to have regular PFME were inadequate self-discipline, knowledge and confidence in performing the exercise and poor motivation and perception. A “Calling You” program in UCH Continence clinic is a phone call reminder to patients to improve PFME adherence, resulting in increased treatment effectiveness and better quality of life.
Objectives :
To compare the patients’ UI condition, PFME compliance (ExC) and Quality of Life (QoL) with or without joining “Calling You” program.
Methodology :
Retrospective study was retrieved from 1.9.2021 to 30.11.2023. Total 58 patients with UI were recruited. 29 patients had jointed the “Calling You” program with intensive bi-weekly phone call reminder for 8 weeks to reinforce the patient PFME compliance. Remaining 29 patients not receiving phone call reminder. Pre and post ICIQ-UI short form and one hour Pad Test (1-hr PadT) for both group were elevated for symptom control, PFE compliance and QoL.
Result & Outcome :
In non-phone call group (N=29), patients’ average age was 63.3 compared to “Calling You” program (N=29) with 56.9. All candidates presented with Stress urinary incontinence (17.2%), Urgency urinary incontinence (19.0%), Mixed urinary incontinence (62.1%). Slightly higher reduction of 1-hr PadT weight in “Calling You” program was noted (78.3%) compared to non-phone call group (73.3%). Significant improvement of PFME compliance in “Calling You” program was noted (42%) compared to non-phone call group (-3.8%). Higher improvement rate on reducing urine leakage episode score in ICIQ-UI Q1 under “Calling You” program was noted (16%) vs non-phone call group (12%) and urine leakage amount score in Q2 under “Calling You” program (13%) vs non-phone call group (7.5%). The score of QoL of patient also has improved by 23.3% in “Calling You” program vs 13.9% in non-phone call group. The score of QoL of patient also has improved by 23.3% in “Calling You” program vs 13.9% in non-phone call group.
“Calling You” program is worthwhile to remind patient in practicing PFME in order to achieve the treatment effectivene
