Introduction :
Taking care of patients with mix-specialty in a ward is quite challenging for nurses especially when responsible doctors were not stationed in hospital. To enhance nurses’ competency and quality of care, a structural training program “Fundamentals in Paediatric Surgical & Orthopaedic Nursing” was implemented.
Objectives :
(1) to equip nursing staff with knowledge in various specialties; (2) to standardize nursing practice.
Methodology :
Lectures with topic related to various specialties such as cleft, thoracic surgery, GI, neurosurgery were held twice a month starting from July 2023, in a 6-months rolling pattern. Senior staff with related specialty training were invited to provide lectures to nursing staff with the aid of Power-Point slides and related equipment for demonstration. Apart from face-to-face lectures, zoom lectures were provided to facilitate staff learning at home. Pretest & posttest with 10 multiple choice questions were used to assess staff knowledge before and after each lecture. Evaluation form was used to evaluate the effectiveness at the end of the lecture.
Result & Outcome :
Nine lectures with different topics were provided with one-third of ward staff participate in each lecture. In the pretest, the percentage of correct answer ranged from 16.6% to 67.6%. In the posttest, the percentage of correct answer ranged from 48.3% to 88.3%. The increase rate of correct answer comparing the result of pretest and posttest ranged from 17.1% to 62%. Staff knowledge was significantly increased. All participants agreed that the lectures were informative and useful in workplace. This structural training program can enhance staff knowledge and competence in caring patients with various specialties.
