Introduction :
Medication safety is considered one of the most important factors in patient care. Since 2020, hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, clinical practicum for nursing students have been restricted and staff training has become one of the biggest challenges, while clinical demands for medication safety remain very high. In order to facilitate colleagues to participate and share, we have adopted a webinar mode, which allows colleagues to participate virtually without concerns about contagion or venue restrictions, and minimizes travel time.
Objectives :
1. To strengthen nurses’ knowledge on commonly used medication in different specialties 2. To alert nurses the important points during medication administration procedures 3. To share the learning points of related medication administration incidents (MAI)
Methodology :
An online sharing platform, namely the Medication Sharing Series (MSS) was established to share a variety of topics in a wide range of areas, including the High Alert Medications, Specialty-related Medication which are commonly used, MAI reflection and learning points, and professionals’ perspectives on medication management. Each sharing session invited speakers with different background such as pharmacy and specialist of various departments and conducted Q&A, quiz and evaluation. The online sharing was conducted during the overlapping duty time of colleagues in A shift and P shift to facilitate the virtual joining of clinical staff while minimizing the impact on clinical operation. Moreover, the corresponding shared videos and information were then published internally through the intranet and the internet for colleagues to conveniently access and review anytime and anywhere.
Result & Outcome :
A total of 20 sessions were held from June 2021 to November 2023, with over 500 staff and 40 wards and units taking part in the live online webinar and more than 200 comments following the webinar were noted. The overall evaluation score was 5.18 using 6-point Likert scale. Positive feedback was received from clinical users. This innovative approach to share webinar online and allowing review after live sessions not only increases the accessibility and penetration of training and information sharing, but also reduces MAI in 2021-2023. Compared with the MAI rate in 2020 before the launch of the MSS, the MAI dropped by 17% in 2021, by 24% in 2022 and by 30% in 2023. MSS has achieved promising result in increasing medication safety awareness in UCH.
