Introduction :
Nurse supervisors should have certain characteristics and adequate preparation for their roles. Yet, there are no specific training on supervisory skill, roles and responsibilities for nurse supervisor. Generally, new promoted APNs may feel lost and frustrated in their career as they cannot get a grasp of supervisors’ roles and responsibilities. In light of this, “Super Vision” program for junior APNs was developed in Department of M&G.
Objectives :
1. To reinforce the APN role development and clinical application
2. To enhance the competences of APN in clinical supervision
3. To broaden the horizon of APN and achieve “Super Vision”
Methodology :
Pre-survey was conducted to identify the training needs for APNs with experience ≤ 5 years. Based on the result, 3 half-day “APN Role Development Workshop – Supervision Series” was developed, program comprises theoretical input, experience sharing session on “Clinical Supervision” (shared by DOM, WM and experienced APNs), group discussion and sharing, group project and presentation. Upon completion of the workshop, APNs are encouraged to apply their supervisory skill in daily practice and share with colleagues in WM meeting weekly, as well as share with nurses through webinar lunch sharing session.
Result & Outcome :
30 APNs with experience ≤ 5 years were recruited into the program. 100% participants satisfied with the program and they all agreed that the program content is practical for application in workplace. 97% participants agreed that the program content is appropriate. To test the effectiveness of the program, further evaluation was conducted in 20 months after the training workshop, 96% participants agreed that the program able to help them demonstrate APN role in clinical, 88% participants agreed that the program able to enrich the perspective on working effectively with supervisors and subordinates.
This tailor-made training workshop effectively delivered the concepts, skills and clear direction to participants through interactive activities. To further enhance confidence and gain clinical experience, participants are encouraged to apply the concepts and skills in daily practice, and share in department.
