Introduction :
After fighting with COVID-19 over 3 years, in comply with the updated isolation policy of COVID-19 patients and the change of admission criteria to specialty of infectious diseases in United Christian hospital, isolation ward should be converted to admit some different subspecialty of medical and geriatrics patients according to department direction to maximize utilization of inpatient beds. In order to strengthen ward nurses’ patient care management during hospitalization and cultivate mutual learning culture, sessions of knowledge and skills sharing and case discussion are implemented.
Objectives :
To strengthen patient care management in various subspecialty of medical and geriatrics nursing
To align nursing practices at ward
To promote mutual learning culture
Methodology :
The clinical experience is shared through lecture sharing and case discussions weekly since August 2023. A protected time during the overlapping periods of AM and PM shift are reserved.
In medical diseases knowledge and skill sharing, nurses are assigned as the speakers. They choose a topic to share in the session every Friday. It promotes the learning atmosphere at ward and transfer the clinical experience to junior nurses.
For case discussion, case nurses share patient’s progress briefly and related nursing management. Throughout the discussion process, the nursing care standard can be reviewed. Therefore, the nursing practices at ward can be aligned to maintain high quality and safety of care provided.
Result & Outcome :
After implementing the sharing sessions and case discussions, nurses expressed positively that it can help them to strengthen updated knowledge in medical nursing. Also, good practices of patient care management can be shared. A mutual learning atmosphere promote excellence in nursing care. Therefore, regular sessions of sharing and discussion should be sustained.
