Introduction :
Number of newly graduate nurses (NGNs) was recruited to meet the increasing services capacity in Tseung Kwan O Hospital. Taking up responsibilities to maintain quality of care according to established nursing standards, guidelines and protocols were challenging by a large proportion of green experienced nurses.
Nursing Assessment and Care Planning Working Group (NACPWG), governed by Nursing Quality and Safety Subcommittee, Nursing Services Division (NSD), was formed by senior nurses from NSD, day wards and inpatient wards from Medical, Surgical, Orthopedics and Gynecological, Pediatrics, Accident and Emergency Departments. Proactively, end-user surveys were designed and useful tips were explored for NGNs to prevent risks and facilitate an efficient and safe holistic patient management during hospitalization.
Objectives :
To identify essential needs fostering competency of NGNs
Methodology :
Two surveys conducted in 2022. 39 NGNs completed first survey directly after training session. NACPWG representatives collected 52 samples from senior nurses, clinical teachers and instructors in second survey from different specialties by evenly distributed proportion.
After extensive discussion based on identified needs, NACPWG designed and promulgated tools and tips in all wards and units.
Result & Outcome :
Both surveys received 100% response. 72% NGNs and 83% senior nurses prioritized “Clinical Handover” as top concern for improvement. 51% NGNs and 73% senior nurses recommended “Checklist on Essential Workflow”; 54% senior nurses recommended “QR Code for Quick Referencing” could facilitate in-charge nurse performance. Checklists such as “Handling Mental Illness Patients” and “Care for the Deceased”; QR Code quick reference such as “Guidelines Reference” and “Investigation Booking and Handling” were in use with positive comments.
In conclusion, tips on daily operation provided NGNs a convenient “short cut” aligning with nursing care standards to promote effective and safe patient management during hospitalization.
