Introduction :
After the incident investigation, it emerged that the skill and knowledge about physical restraint should be enhanced to ensure patient safety. Therefore, a series of workshops were conducted.
Objectives :
The participants should understand or demonstrate the following items: 1. Patient assessment for physical restraint 2. Communication with patients and relatives about physical restraint 3. Common types of physical restraint 4. Nursing care and documentation about physical restraint 5. Guidelines and Nursing Standards about physical restraint 6. Apply physical restraint in an appropriate manner
Methodology :
Promulgate the training in different ways, such as Senior Nursing Management meetings, emails, etc. 16 identical small-group half-hour training were conducted for frontline staff who required applying physical restraint. The training was conducted in various modalities to speed up the learning process, such as brief theory input, video, and demonstration. Candidates were required to split into small-group for return demonstration, to enhance interaction and ensure the correct skill they learnt.
Result & Outcome :
Around half of the frontline nurses or patient care assistants attend this training. Good evaluation rating (>80%) after the training. One hundred and fifty-seven care-related staff join this training. After excluding the supervisors, 110 RN & EN attended (about 46% of frontline nurses), and 26 PCA attended (about 45% of ward PCAs). One hundred and thirty-one evaluation forms were received, with a response rate of 83% of all participants. More than 85% of the participants were satisfied with the training.
A videos was produced for more staff to refresh their skill and knowledge anytime. This video was further promulgate to HKWC.
