Introduction :
The Basic Nursing Skills Workshop was launched at Haven of Hope Hospital in August 2023 which aims at refreshing and upholding basic clinical skills among nurses. Additionally, the workshop provides an opportunity for junior nurses to practise essential skills, including those that are not frequently observed in convalescent settings. By emphasising adherence to guidelines and protocols, the workshop seeks to reinforce quality care and align nursing practices.
Objectives :
(1) To enable nurses to refresh their basic clinical skills and maintain high standards of care
(2) To provide a conducive learning environment for junior nurses to practise and enhance their proficiency in essential clinical skills
Methodology :
The workshop is conducted bimonthly, with each session focusing on a specific topic selected in advance to address crucial areas of clinical competence. Examples of scheduled topics include, caring for central venous catheters (CVC), blood product transfusion, and chest drain care. Approximately 30 participants are accommodated in each session, which lasts for one hour. While the primary target audience is junior nurses, experienced nurses seeking to refresh their knowledge are also encouraged to participate, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
The workshop adopts a hands-on approach, where participants rotate through different skill stations, actively engaging in practical exercises related to the designated topic. For example, the CVC care workshop is structured into four stations, each addressing specific aspects of CVC related management. Participants rotate through stations dedicated to practising line flushing techniques, dressing changes, assisting in catheter removal, and troubleshooting. This experiential learning allows participants to reinforce their understanding of specific skills and their practical application in delivering quality care. By concentrating on a single topic per workshop, participants have the opportunity to thoroughly explore the intricacies of each skill, enhancing their competence and confidence. The workshop also includes discussions on past incidents related to the topic, providing valuable learning opportunities and emphasising preventive measures. This approach fosters proactive risk management and patient safety.
Each session concludes with a concise presentation summarising the key take-home messages, ensuring participants leave with a clear understanding of the skills practised and their significance in their daily nursing responsibilities.
Result & Outcome :
A total of 85 participants actively engaged in the last three workshops. Evaluations indicate that a majority of nurses (90%) find the interactive workshops more effective than independent reading. The programme has successfully helped maintain clinical competence, empowering high-quality care delivery aligned with guidelines. Notable outcomes include heightened risk awareness among participants. Discussions contribute to a culture of proactive safety management.
