Introduction :
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) and Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIED) Implantation are the two common procedures in our cardiology service.
Previously, information fact sheets with verbal description were provided to patients for PCI and CIED procedures. Sometimes, patients still called back for further explanation for procedure logistics that might increase the workload of nursing staff. Besides, patient empowerment by education could further enhance their compliance to adhere necessary regimens in order to facilitate optimal outcome.
Objectives :
1. Empower patients with disease knowledge and procedures on PCI and CIED with easily accessible education material
2. Promote patient-centered care and their compliance to adhere necessary regimens
3. Enhance nursing staff satisfaction with education material and reduce their workload
Methodology :
In order to enhance patients’ knowledge on PCI and CIED logistics, two comprehensive education videos on PCI and CIDE with disease causes, preparation on or before the procedures, post care and continuity of care were developed and provided to patient and their careers. Moreover, posters with relevant information were also generated which could be easily accessed at any time.
Nurses in Coronary Care Unit(CCU), Medical Ambulatory Care Centre(MACC) and cardiac stepdown ward were included as service providers in this program from 1st August to 31st October 2023. Comprehensive videos of PCI and CIED were demonstrated to patients through iPad. Nurses would assess their patients to pinpoint the best way for education. Nurses also encouraged patients to ask question to zero in on concern after watching the video. Different posters with relevant information were posted in these wards for easily approach and information.
Result & Outcome :
Two questionnaires were developed to collect feedback from patients and nurses respectively for evaluation.
5-point Likert scale was used to assess the effectiveness of improving patients' understanding and nurses’ motivation and satisfaction. Finally, an open-ended question was designed to record comments.
Total 216 patients had undergone PCI (n=193) and CIED implantation (n=23) and 190 questionnaires were collected. Majority of patients agreed the education package enhanced their understanding of their disease, operation process and after-care. The package helped to reduce their anxiety and increased their confidence. Overall satisfaction level related to the educational package were satisfied with a mean score over 4.3.
Total 30 questionnaires were returned from nursing staff. They expressed the education materials were easy to understand, more convenience, efficient and time saving when compared with current practice. Overall, the majority of nursing staff expressed their satisfaction and willingness to use the education package continuously in the future with mean score 4.1.
All patients and nurses were highly satisfied with this empowerment program and found it was very useful and effective. Therefore, we will implement this program in general medical wards as our usual practice.
