Introduction :
Osteoporosis results in bone fragility and hence increase susceptibility to fractures, which is a major public health problem especially affecting elderly. According to the population census in year 2021, the proportion of older population increased from 13% to 19.6% in the past ten years in Hong Kong.
Regular exercise, diet, fall prevention and pharmacological treatment, are all essential in managing osteoporosis. Multi-disciplinary team program to provide education on disease nature, treatment plan, exercise, diet and medication, is importance for patient self-management skill.
Objectives :
To evaluate the effectiveness of education program on improving disease knowledge and patient’s satisfaction on the program.
Methodology :
Multi-disciplinary team education program was arranged for patients with newly diagnosed osteoporosis. Education content covered disease etiology, treatment plan, drug, exercise, diet, life-style suggestion and fall prevention started since 2019.
Data were retrieved from April 2023 to December 2023 to evaluate the value of multi-disciplinary education program. Pre and post education program knowledge assessment was done to evaluate the change in knowledge and patient satisfaction survey was performed.
Knowledge assessment comprised disease, investigation, medication, exercise, diet, and fall prevention. Patient satisfaction survey included education content, program arrangement and expectation for the program.
Result & Outcome :
Totally 37 cases have been recruited (male to female 2:35; age ranged from 49 – 89). 34 cases completed the knowledge assessment form and patient satisfaction survey.
After the program, 85.3% of participants increased knowledge assessment score (from 8% to 92%). 35.3% of participants with knowledge score increased ≥ 50%. 97.1% of participants satisfied with the overall program arrangement. More than 90% of participants agreed or strongly agreed the education program is helpful in increase their knowledge and self-management skill. 94 % of participant agreed or strongly agreed the education program can achieve their personal goal of attending the program.
Multidisciplinary education program is an effective way to increase patient’s knowledge and enhance self-management skill. The program should be promoted for all newly diagnosed osteoporosis patients.
