Introduction :
There were numerous training programs for health care professionals but few for Patient Care Assistants (PCA) in Hospital Authority (HA), where majority of the Basic Care to patients were provided by them, having a standardized assessment and refresher training program help monitoring and improving the performance and retaining PCA at workforce.
Objectives :
To report on development and implementation of Refresher Training Program for PCA in Accident and Emergency Department (A&E)
Methodology :
There was report of insufficient training from PCA on skills and contingency management. To prepare for development and implementation, meeting was held with PCA on the needs and contents of training in February 2023, the ten Assessments in A&E were revised, protected time for training were discussed with Manager, 8 Refresher Training Programs (with didactic, simulation and drill) of 1) Ten Assessments; 2) Last Office and Route to blood bank; 3) Basic Infection Control; 4) Patient lifting and transfer; 5) Trolley settings; 6) Fire Safety and Drill; 7) Civil disaster and drill and 8) Hospital Accreditation were tailor-made to provide PCA with knowledge, skills and competency customized working in A&E.
Result & Outcome :
The Refresher Training Program were organized from March to December 2023, one day per month was assigned for training 2/3 of PCA in A&E, almost all of the PCA had covered 5/8 topics of the training program. The ten assessments were carried out quarterly and significant improvement were noted. Implementation were smooth and comments of the training program were satisfactory. Same number of workforce was maintained in 2023. Conclusion: Through development of Refresher training program, the implementation measures were feasible and results in significant improvement of PCA performance and retention in A&E, both training and service needs were met.
